Decision making and conflicts resolutions!
Decision making at corporates is a complex process; simple decisions making process often end up in conflicts, policy paralysis, inertia or
envy and politics that are all detrimental to the interest of the company.
People deal with people, each have different economic and business objectives, interest and responsibilities. However, it is 'of the business, by the business and for the business!'
Unfortunately, there will always be unexplainable political, cultural and personal challenges involved in resolving conflicts and decision making process. There isn't much to discuss about unexplainable factors as decisions eventually in the long run have to converge to company's interest!
Inertia, conflicts and policy paralysis alter the culture of the company, damage and destroy talent and their morale, impact the corporate credibility and the company business.
Many theories have been written on conflict resolution, importance of communication and corporate culture to manage conflicts however there are few objective rules that could potentially solve 80% of challenges and result in better decisions that further the interest of the company.
Decision making and conflict resolution can potentially be simplified using few logical questions and framework which needs to be implemented with a human touch, humility and objectively.
- What is good for the company is good for everyone in the company! This is a powerful statement as it helps in converging the divergent interest and views. All decisions involving business, customers, and people must revolve around the company goals, vision, reputation and culture.
- Will the decision result in a sustainable business opportunity ? Decisions must lead to sustained revenues or an innovation or a permanent cost saving for the company. One off economically viable business decisions are made whenever there is spare capacity or an opportunity to learn about a new idea, market or skills.
- It is all business, nothing is personal: in short, 'of the business, by the business and for the business!' Is the decision or driven by personal motives or personal judgements and egos ?
- Is it safe and secure for people, assets, resources and the company ?
- Is the decision aligned with corporate culture and the vision of the company?
- Does the decision comply with company value, code of conduct and ethics? Will the decision impact the reputation of the company and the people?
- Will the decision satisfy the customer needs and market interest resulting in a profitable opportunity or a satisfied customer?
- Is the decision good for the people and talent ?
- Is the decision environmental friendly? does it impacts the community?
- Is there a broad consensus?Everyone has a point of view which must be allowed to expression however the view may not be accepted nor factored in the decision. Once a concensus and decision is arrived everyone must ensure that they have to champion and execute the decision.
This framework can also be used in everyday life; replace the word 'company' with 'family'.
