Expectations from a successful team!
Successful teams are always feared for their performance but what makes them tick and exceed performance are some of the values that they imbibe from their coach. Team players may change however values and culture remain steadfast.
Both leaders and teams needs to recognize these values to succeed as teams and as individuals; the expectations and responsibilities from leaders and teams are equal. After the leader creates and perpetuates the right environment and behaviours, the teams overwhelms the leader.
- Championing of vision, goals and execution by one and all. All in sync to score a common goal and vision. One team one goal: united we score and win, divided we fall.
- Customer and market focus, people oriented, innovative and insightful, high performance ensures a thriving and profitable business.
- Co-operation and collaboration. Staying together until the last mile and helping each other is one mantra. When one member derails (or is down), everyone supports that member and the team remains united.
- Culture matters and plays a major factor in success or failure of talent and teams; it starts with the leader first that creates a good precedent. Trust, respect, diversity and inclusion, integrity, conviction, courage, good governance, equal opportunity, empowerment and transparency promotes good culture and high engagement.
- Change management is constant as everything is transient, customers are knowledgeable and demanding, and constructive (destructive) technology is at play.
- Competition is not to be feared; healthy competition creates constructive tension and increases efficiency and productivity.
- Committed and engaged leadership and people that wishes well for the company, customers, people, stakeholders, society and environment.
- Communication - making it 2-way, transparent, open, and respectful.
Everyone knows that Germans won the 2014 FIFA world cup on the strength of team play; very little is known about those unsung teams and one of them I met at Rural Development Foundation (RDF India) http://rdfindia.org.
This is a team of music students a (RDF) in a small improvised village 160 km from Hyderabad, India that performed a welcome music melodiously with guidance and mentorship from their teachers and mentors in basking sun and heat without shoes. The team played one the best tune in sync despite all odds.
Thanks to the RDF team and this band for making this journey memorable, enriching, and inspiring!
