Enterprise Leadership Journey - Iclif Leadership and Governance Centre and SML

* Leadership is the art of harnessing human energy towards the creation of a better future. In the process of harnessing energy, leaders respect and value people at all levels. Leaders bring out the best in others and cares about success of everyone; they earn respect.

* Leadership is all about creating change for a better future. Not giving up on the envisioned better future is at the heart of powerful leadership. Creating change encounters huge resistance at every step. Staying the course despite resistance requires deep intrinsic leadership energy.

* Leaders are not born but are nurtured (or nurture themselves). Leadership is not a title or position to command or direct a group and is neither measured by the wealth nor income.

* Leaders are ordinary people that assume extraordinary positions and they remain ordinary; leadership exist at all levels in the organisation and is situational. Our lowest (forced) ranking colleague is a leader in his own scope of work and his family or society! Think of Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Jokowi, Malala, and other ordinary people that became leaders when they discovered their purpose, personal value and energy which was harnessed to make the world a better place.

* All managers and bosses are not leaders so they don’t have followers; all leaders are not necessarily bosses.

* Leaders personal values and professional values are same they don’t collide nor must they be different – authenticity is the key!

* Leadership is a choice and a journey that last throughout the life (is not a destination)!

* Leaders are not shy of failure nor do they easily give up their values and purpose. Success represents the 1% of your work which results from the 99% that is called failure - Soichiro Honda

* Leaders talk the talk, walk the talk. Integrity!!

* Leaders often practice visualization (imageneering) and inner coaching, self talks; play sports, practice deep breathing and calmness and often enjoy arts, comedy and music.

* Return on integrity and character is greater than return on investments; 65% of equity valuation is from intangibles - the culture, peoples behaviours, talent, values, business strength, innovations, corporate brand, respect from community and society.

This is why companies invest heavily on personal ethics, behaviours, corporate governance and Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability programs. Great organisations ensure that their leadership energy remains focused on ethical, sustainable and responsible pursuits; these organisations integrate both high performance and positive behaviours in their performance appraisals.

* Leaders align and maximise the energy of their people and organisations. Once leaders have uncovered their own unique sources of leadership energy, they make another transition – from ‘I’ to ‘We’ by willingly sharing authority and responsibility without feeling insecure. Leader maximise and maintain the energy and focus of the rest of the organisation.

* Leadership energy is self-discovered and self-created. Leaders discover their purpose, values and (integrate) their shadows. They do the right thing with integrity. They harness energise and remain energised; create a better and sustainable future for everyone!

* High Emotional Integrity (EI) is a pre-requisite to maximising one’s leadership energy. EI is having the courage to acknowledge and accept one’s deepest desires (and shadows) without judgment or guilt.
Leaders ask right questions. What, when, who, how...... Why not, what if, what more!

* Leaders always think win-win whether it’s for conflict resolution and negotiations.

* Leaders have a presence by the virtue of their confidence, character, substance, reliance on their team, ownership,  poise under pressure and decisiveness. They have a relaxed body, clear mind, open heart and even breath.

*  Reciprocity is key to success! Reciprocity requires people to be compassionate, forgiving, responsible, accountable and possess strong integrity/ethics.

* Constructive tension, coopetition, collaboration results in a sharing environment and creative juices emerges

*  5 key internal reasons why companies fail – lack of vision, focus and inability to nail a profitable model, lack of integrity and accountability, lack of an high performing environment and internal collaboration, no customer focus, no innovation, dysfunctional leadership.

* Self-destructive habits of good leaders – denial of reality, arrogance, complacency, competence dependence, competitive myopia, volume obsession, territorial impulse, cultural conflicts and turf wars
