Getting India right: Build connections. What's new! Part 3
Continued from Part 1 and 2:
1. People at head office/regional offices (HO/RO) like certainty and consistency in global policy implementation which is okay as long as it is managed correctly by the local teams!
• Most corporations will have to evolve and be managed as globally integrated enterprises; colleagues in the HO/RO with global mindsets must help build bridges and connect the dots.
• Head office people often dislike the noise coming out of India (or emerging markets) as the frequency and the noise changes too quickly, so as Managers you got to patiently balance the right noise with your HO, local office and the global culture.
• Ensure your colleagues understand the diversities - invite them to travel to your customers and factory locations.
• HO/RO must also ensure that they employ people with multicultural understanding, higher tolerance levels and respectful of diversity across the region.
Japan or China or Singapore or HK does not fit an India model; India still has a long way! As per my experience most American, British, Korean, Japanese and Chinese executives are more culturally sensitive and tolerant compared to other nationalities as they tend to accept the uniqueness and compare their own country's history.
2. Help your corporation innovate, succeed and build the talent pool! Leverage India for global strategic advantage.
• Even if you don’t make money in India, you are sure to make it elsewhere!
• Even if the manager does not succeed in India he is bound to succeed elsewhere as his skills, experience, wisdom, learning agility and attitude will help him in other markets that are less complicated to handle.
• Even if you do not succeed in India be prepared to export local innovations, best practices and talent internationally. Many companies export innovations or outsourcing and cost saving best practices globally!
3. Do it right!
Be prepared to walk away from an opportunity instead of falling into a booby trap. Ensure that you do not compromise on ethics, code of conduct and reputation. High level of integrity will create loyal customers, employees and stakeholders; loyalty helps corporations thrive via increase productivity, profitability and reputation.
Sounds nothing new, right! That is the point, India is Incredible, but as diverse as any other emerging market.
I take this opportunity to thank my family, my colleagues, manager, peers, the customers, farmers, suppliers, bankers, regulators that supported me and the many friends that I made in my journey that enriched my experience and my circle of friendship. I also thank the people that helped me succeed and thrive!
